Add student quotes, teacher statements and cover art to your yearbook

Photos tell what happened. Words and artwork tell what it felt like. Each of these three needs the same four things: a person who asks, a clear prompt, a deadline, and someone who approves what comes in. Choose the ones you can finish, and do them well rather than starting all three halfway.

What can I collect?

  • Student quotes. One short answer each, in the child's own words. Ask one question of everyone: what they hope to be when they grow up, a favorite quote or saying, something they love about school, or advice for younger students. Keep the limit short so answers fit on a page. Quote form and announcement wording
  • Teacher statements. A short reflection from each class teacher on the year: the growth and the moments that defined it. Taking part should be optional. Teacher statement form
  • Cover art. Families send a photo of a child's artwork, and you choose a winner for the front or back cover. Cover art contest kit

How do I run any of them?

  1. Pick the one prompt. One question for quotes, one paragraph prompt for teachers.
  2. Set a deadline. Put it before your photo deadline so nothing arrives after the pages are planned.
  3. Share one link. A single link or QR code on a flyer and in an email beats a dozen separate requests.
  4. Review before anything is printed. Read every answer for names, spelling and anything a family would not want in print. Reject or edit what needs it.
  5. Place it. Decide which pages the content goes on before it arrives, so you know how much space to give it.

For artwork, ask families to photograph the art flat, in daylight, filling the frame. A photo that is too small can be re-taken, so check entries early.

What do I do this week?

  • ☐  Choose which of the three you will run, and write down who is in charge of each.
  • ☐  Write the prompt for each, in one sentence.
  • ☐  Set a deadline for each, before your photo deadline.
  • ☐  Name the person who reviews entries and the date they finish.
  • ☐  Mark the pages where each will go on your yearbook ladder.
At Rethink schools

How does this work at a Rethink school?

Optional Content in your dashboard has a card for each of these. Turn a card on, set a deadline, and share its link or QR code. Quotes let you choose the question and a character limit. Teacher statements go to your teachers by link. Cover art entries arrive as photos, and "Use as front cover" or "Use as back cover" sets the winner and shows the credit beside the cover. You approve or reject each quote and statement before it counts, and approved entries are filed in your school's own Drive, under Optional Content. If a winning cover photo is too small to print well, upload a better photo of the art on the Traditional Yearbook page. When your ladder has a page for them, First Draft includes the approved quotes and statements. A card's deadline has to fall on or before your photo deadline.
