How to make a school yearbook in Canva

Yes, you can make a school yearbook in Canva. It runs in a browser and lets a whole committee edit at once; the real work is planning the pages, collecting photos and getting the file ready for a printer. Here are the six steps.

The short answer

Is Canva good enough for a school yearbook?

For the design, yes. Canva handles layouts, fonts, frames and shared editing, and most parent volunteers have already used it for a flyer. What it does not do is print: the pages still have to meet your printer’s page size, bleed and resolution, and the book still has to be printed and bound. Ask your printer for its file specs before you design page one.

Rethink’s Canva templates are already sized for the printed book, with bleed and margins correct. Which yearbook software is easiest for volunteers.

Step by step

How do I make a yearbook in Canva?

  1. Write the page plan first. List every page and who or what goes on it, before you open Canva. The yearbook ladder and a free template.
  2. Start from a template, not a blank page. Pick a design that already has the page types you need: class pages, events, a cover. Canva yearbook templates for elementary schools.
  3. Set up one design and one owner. Invite the committee as editors, and give one person ownership of the final file so pages don’t drift apart in copies.
  4. Add photos in batches, by event or class. Use a photo plan so each page gets what it needs. Plan photos page by page.
  5. Keep text and faces away from the edge. Pages are trimmed after printing, so anything close to the edge can be cut off. Keep titles, page numbers, names and faces at least half an inch inside the trim line, and a little more on the side where the book is bound.
  6. Proofread, then export. Someone who did not build the pages checks every name against the class lists, twice. Then export in the format and size your printer asks for.
Mistakes

What are the common Canva yearbook mistakes?

  • Low-resolution photos that look fine on screen and soft in print.
  • Designing with no bleed, so backgrounds stop short of the edge.
  • Designing at the wrong page size and resizing at the end, which moves everything.
  • Fonts too small for a child to read.
  • Names typed from memory instead of copied from the class list.
  • Several people editing the same page with no owner.
Short on time

When should we take a First Draft instead?

If nobody on your team has the hours to lay out every page, Rethink’s free First Draft builds a complete first draft from your page plan and template choice, with standard layouts. Your team then edits it in Canva. First Draft is not custom design, and Rethink does not make your edits for you.
