5th-grade memory books for a single class or grade
A 5th-grade memory book is a short printed book for one grade, usually the last year of elementary school, made instead of or alongside the school yearbook. It can be as small as one class, and the price depends mostly on page count and cover: a simple stapled booklet can cost a few dollars a copy, while a personalized, bound book costs more.
Here is what goes in one, how it differs from a yearbook, and an honest view of which kind your class needs.
What is a memory book, and how is it different from a yearbook?
A school yearbook covers the whole school: every grade, the staff, the year’s events. A memory book covers one group, most often the graduating 5th or 6th grade, and is usually organized by a grade committee, a teacher or a few parents rather than the PTA’s yearbook chair.
That changes three things:
- Size. Memory books are shorter. The requests we see are for 20 to 60 pages.
- Run. One grade might be 30 to 100 books, not several hundred.
- Voice. A yearbook records the year. A memory book is about these particular children leaving: what they said, who they were, where they are headed.
Some schools make both: the yearbook for everyone and a memory book for the leavers. Others only make the memory book.
What goes in a 5th-grade memory book?
Start from the children, not the photos. Most memory books include some of these:
- Class portraits, one page or spread per class
- Student quotes: what they want to be, advice for younger students, a favorite memory. Free 5th-grade quotes form
- Then and now: a kindergarten photo beside a 5th-grade one
- Teacher messages: a short note from each teacher to the class. Free teacher statement form
- Field trips, camp and the big 5th-grade events
- The promotion or graduation ceremony, if the book can wait for it
- Autograph pages, which are always needed
- Dedications from families, which can also raise money for the grade’s party or gift

How small can the print run be?
It can be as small as your class, if your printer allows it. Some vendors set a minimum order inside the quote, so ask for it in writing before you compare prices.
At Rethink there is no order minimum, as of 28 August 2026. We print what families order, so a 30-book class pays the same per copy as a 300-book school, and nobody is left holding unsold books.
How much does a 5th-grade memory book cost?
It depends on what you want the book to be. Roughly, from least to most:
- Free, or close to it. A printable booklet students fill in themselves, copied at school. Our student memory book activity is free and needs no purchase.
- A few dollars a copy. A short, stapled (saddle-stitched) book with no personalization. As of September 2026, at least one online yearbook printer publishes retail prices for a 20-page stapled book at under $10 a copy, with lower prices for larger orders.
- Around $20 to $35 a copy. A bound softcover of normal yearbook quality, with pages that extend it. What a yearbook actually costs.
- More, for personalization or hardcover. Each child’s name on the cover, pages built for that child, or a hard cover.
Budgets in the requests we get range from about $4 a book to hardcovers at 50 to 60 pages. Both are reasonable. They just aren’t the same product.
Is Rethink the right choice for a memory book?
Not always, and it is better to know that now.
Rethink’s softcover books start from $20 a copy, priced by page count, with $0 setup and no deposit. That makes us a poor fit if your budget is $4 to $7 a book. At that price, choose a stapled booklet from a low-cost printer, or print the free activity at school.

With the personalization upgrade, each child’s copy gets extra pages built from 35 to 60 candids from their own class and grade (the number depends on what the school uploads), plus their name and photo on the cover. Families can also add up to two pages of their own. The upgrades are each family’s choice, so a family that wants the plain book pays the plain price. What “personalized” means at different vendors.
Books are printed in the USA and arrive about three weeks after you approve the book.
When is a simpler memory book the better fit?
- Your budget is under about $10 a copy. Pick a stapled booklet or a printable.
- Nobody has many photos. A quote-and-autograph book works without them, and personalized photo pages need photos to draw from.
- The book needs to be ready in days. Printed books need time to design, check and print.
- Every child must get one, and families won’t pay. A free printable, or a book paid for by the PTA or a fundraiser, is fairer than a paid book only some families buy.
When is a personalized memory book worth it?
- The grade has been photographed all year, by teachers, on trips and at events, so there is plenty to draw from.
- Families want a keepsake, not a program: a hard cover, their child’s name on the front, pages that are about their child’s class.
- You don’t want the pages to depend on who volunteered. Every child is in the shared pages, and personalized pages are built from the class and grade’s photos, so a family that chooses personalization gets pages about their own child’s class whether or not they sent in a single photo.
- You would rather raise money than spend it. The family price can include $2 to $5 a book for the grade’s party or gift. A 5% processing fee applies to money paid out to the PTA; none applies when it goes toward more books.
